Exorcism

by Carl Frederik Waage Beck on februar 9, 2009

Back in 2006 one of the first steps made by the then newly appointed head of Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Bo Nilsson, was to expel the artists’ cooperatives e.g. Grønningen from the old castle. As a result these cooperatives have since been vagabonding throughout Denmark in search for a new house to occupy. For some art lovers this has been a welcome opportunity to enjoy the work of their favourite artists at a more convenient location.

One can however critizise the use of public museums as venues for art on sale since this is grossly distorting the marketplace for galleries which run on market terms and are not state subsidized.

Kunsthal Charlottenborg seems to have proven its concept (at least the politicians support it) but having now exorcised Bo Nillson will we see a return of the cooperatives to Charlottenborg? I certainly hope so!

Bo Nilsson paints himself into a corner

by Carl Frederik Waage Beck on januar 25, 2009

Bo Nilsson the now former CEO of Kunsthal Charlottenborg was sacked the other day.
Maybe his private use of public funds was not understood by the Danish Minister of Culture Carina Christensen…
